Thanks to everyone for all of your hard work this season.  Let’s finish with 2 more championships in the trophy case.

GO CHIEFS!!!!

Playoffs? We’re talking about Playoffs?

It’s been a great regular season.  The boys fought hard, worked hard and hopefully learned a ton.  5 of our 7 teams are still in the hunt for a championship.  This validates that your Sequoyah District is a football powerhouse.  High School football games are going to be fun to watch at Skip Pope Stadium in the next 8-9 years!  Be sure to get out there and support these Chiefs.  Let’s bring home some more trophies!

Sequoyah Spotlight

The Fall break threw many of us off schedule, so we have some catching up to do with the Player spotlights from the Sequoyah district.  I’ve only received information from two teams for the previous weeks and only one for week 6.  Parents, if you want to see updates make sure to let your coach know they need to send it in.  The submissions are from the Coaches.
.

WEEK 7:

.

SEQUOYAH BLACK 8/9

.

Coming off of their first loss of the season, Sequoyah Black was ready to get back to what they do best, “Lay the Wood!”  Walker Wilkie was a key player who attributed to Black’s win.  He played tight end which allowed us to complete a lot of runs off the corner. He earned the Offensive “Golden” football award.  Daniel McCrobie earned the Defensive “Hammer” award. The kid went from wanting to quit on the first week of practice to getting 5 tackles to keep Woodstock at bay.  None other than our very own Gilmer Co. earned the Special Teams player of the game by recovering an onside kick.  Holden Samuels was awarded Player of the Game.  Holden helped his team secure a win with his performance on both sides of the ball.

WEEK 6:

.

SEQUOYAH WHITE 8/9

.

The game got off to a quick start with a Hudson Thran Touchdown run, then it was a defensive battle from there.  A few fumbles kept the Chiefs from running up the score and the defensive battle began.  Grant, “Bring the Pain” Painter stepped up big time with some Monster Blocks allowing for some big gains.  On Defense, Walker Gilkey and Aden Cornett came up big with some serious tackles to force the Cherokee Warriors to punt.  In the end, the Chiefs prevailed and everyone was friends again.  The Cherokee Quarterback (Riley Lyons) and Sequoyah Quarterback (Samuel Cornett) along with Chief running back (Keon Smart) are all teammates on the North Georgia Irish 3rd grade basketball team.  Sportsmanship and character prevailed in a hard fought game by both teams.

.

 .

SEQUOYAH BLACK 8/9

.

We were ready for a heavyweight fight against Creekview Black, and a heavyweight fight is what we got. We were missing our 1-2-1 punches due to our QB, TE, and the one and only Gilmer County out with broken arms and a illness that just could not be shaken for 7 days. The boys fought hard for all four quarters, even when we lost the “Fastest Man Alive” in the fourth quarter. The boys came together to stick one in late with the help of our O
ffensive player of the game and earning the “Golden” football was Holden Samuels. The Defense is what kept it close with Player of the Game Conner Johnston who busted them Creekview boys up on both sides of the ball.  His sidekick RJ Coughenour earned the “Hammer” on Defense for laying the wood. To sum it all up, we had another special performance by the one and only “The Great Wazz” on Special Teams. This was his second time winning the award…. way to go Wazz! We look forward to a rematch of the Rumble Royal between two great heavyweights between the goal post.

.

WEEK 5:
.

Sequoyah Black 8/9
.
Sequoyah Black wins a tough fought game against Cherokee Red 15-14.  Our success coming into the game was unknown since our QB Mitch Walker was out with a fractured elbow.  Zeke Quarles stepped up to the plate as QB and had no fumbles, threw for a 2-pt conversion, and ran it in for 1-pt conversion which helped to secure the win.  He was awarded the Offensive “Golden” football.  Zeke’s success was due to the hard work of center Cody Mailhes.  Cody snapped well all day and picked up a few blitzes.  He also had a huge 2nd down play on the last drive where he broke through the line and made the tackle for a loss of yards.  Cody was awarded the Defensive “Hammer.”  Lance Leatherwood was the Special Teams player of the game.  He caught and secured an onside kick from Cherokee which allowed our offense to march down the field.  Harrison Allen was awarded Player of the Game.  He had several key plays on offense where he gained critical yards by pushing the Warrior line back.  At one point, Harrison blew through a hole and drug the Warrior defensive line several yards to keep the drive alive.

Sequoyah 8/9 White:

The Chiefs lost a nail biter to the Creekview Green team.  Everyone pitched in to do their best.  It was “flag day” and no one but the refs knew about the holiday.  Tons of penalties took the boys down, but there was a great highlight of the day with what could be the best action picture ever.  Yes, Keon Smart made this tackle to save the TD.

.

.

WEEK 4.

Sequoyah Black 8/9

.

Player of the Game is Hunter Blayton.  He comes north of the county, straight out of Gilmer.  He is only known as “Gilmer County.”  He reminds you of a young Singletary because of the way he pursues the ball.  Carter Miller was the Offensive recipient of the ”Golden Football” for his efforts in opening holes.  Zeke Quarles was the Defensive recipient of the “Hammer” due to his down hill tackling which resulting in sending kids off the field crying.  Samuel Wasielewski was our Special Teams recipient due to the fact that he is the one and only, “The Great Wazz.” His ability to get down the field and pin them deep is why special teams are special.  These four players were just a piece of the puzzle to the team effort to seal another victory for Sequoyah Black.
.

Week 6 Chief Nation…..Are you ready?

Here we go Chiefs.  It is Week 6.  We have a lot of undefeated teams in Chief Nation and a lot of effort all around.

 .

Since Hank Williams Jr.. has been let go by CYFA for his comments and will not be singing the intro to SATURDAY MORNING FOOTBALL, let’s get this week in Football Started off with some of my favorite quotes.

Week 3 is in the books… a review!!

It was a great homecoming for the Sequoyah district this year.  4 out of the 7 teams brought home the “W”.

.

Game 1:  Sequoyah Black 6/7 – 8  vs. Cherokee Black 6/7 -8 (won in overtime)

.

What a way to start the day with an overtime battle.  Cherokee Black was able to hold the chiefs and steal the victory.

.

Game 2:  Sequoyah Gold 6/7 – 0 vs. Creekview White 6/7 – 28
.

Our little Chiefs tried to get the victory train rolling, but the engine wouldn’t start.  Those Grizzlies were too much on Saturday.
.

Game 3:  Sequoyah White 8/9 – 6 vs. Creekview Black – 20
.

This game got off to a great start.  Creekview scored, then the mighty Chiefs marched up the field and scored as well.  Both teams played tough until half-time.  In the second half, the Grizzlies took over with Sequoyah trying to stay in it by making some big plays, including a 30 yard pass from Christian Hodgins to Andrew Vyneman.  It didn’t seem to be enough.  On a positive note we have “Hollywood” Jack Vogel back and were able to raise over $200.00 for the Ronald McDonald House of Atlanta Charity.  Thanks to everyone for  your prayers and support.
.

.

Game 4:  Sequoyah Black Wins a Nail Biter at Homecoming 19-18
.

Sequoyah Black extends its winning streak to 3 after a back and forth Homecoming win against Creekview on Saturday. The game started with an electrifying Special Teams kickoff return by Marquez Davis that set up a short field for the offense. Mark O’Brien ran for 3 TDs in the game and Harrison Allen forced his way into the in-zone for a key extra point that gave Black a 1 point lead late in the 3rd quarter. The player of the game was Zeke Quarles who had numerous touches and pounded the middle of that Creekview defensive all day. But with such a close game though it came down to the defense, Black and Gold were up to the task. Lead by defensive player of the game Connor Johnston the defenses stopped a crucial extra point that sealed the win for the 8/9 Sequoyah Black and kept the winning streak alive.
.

.

Game 5:  Sequoyah Gold 18 – River Ridge Blue 6
.

Damian D’Allasandro led a vicious running attack Saturday in the 18-6 victory for Sequoyah Gold.  The offensive line anchored by Jake Henley, Christian Kirby, Jack Thompson, Ben Gilleland, and Shawn Mask made it all possible by providing the blocks necessary to get our backs out in the open field.  Defensively, it was a stop on the 1 yard line on 4th and goal which shored up the victory.  Nate Pollard and Collin Koprowski were our defensive players of the week making several key tackles.  All 21 players on the team contributed when it was their time to play!  The coaches are extremely proud of the team for taking their record to 3-0.
.
Game 6:  Sequoyah Black 10/11 – 26 – Woodstock White 10/11 – 0
.
The head chiefs of the tribe took over this game from the kickoff.  Not much to watch except for Chiefs in the endzone.
.
Game 7:  Sequoyah Gold 10/11 – 6 – Etowah Blue – 0
.
This game was a defensive battle from the start.  The Chiefs held strong against the Eagles and brought home the victory.
.
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER CAME FROM THE 10/11 GOLD TEAM.
Congratulations to the Majeed family for their awesome phone photo!  They win a Sequoyah Chief football license plate so everyone will know who they support!!

BEHAVIOR:

.
I have heard that there was a lot of inappropriate behavior from other districts at last week’s Creekview homecoming.  Parents from some other districts really did a poor job of setting an example for our youth.  Please be respectful and cheer on ALL the Sequoyah Teams.  The other 6/7, 8/9, 10/11 Sequoyah teams should not be our rivals.  Creekview, Etowah, Woodstock, River Ridge and Cherokee should be.  Maybe make an effort and stay at least one extra game to cheer on your fellow Chiefs!

.

CONCESSION & CLEAN UP:
Concessions will be open and available at 8:00AM.  Please do not bring your own food and drinks.  Only teams should have coolers.

Please try to clean up around your area and use the trash cans.  Our volunteers and coaches give their time to coach and make CYFA possible.  Please don’t make them have to stay and clean up a huge mess.  We are a feeder into Sequoyah High School, so be respectful of the school and their property.  We are guests.

.

That’s all I have.  I hope we have SEVEN Sequoyah Victories on Saturday, and everyone be safe.

WEEK 2 IN REVIEW – SEQUOYAH 5 – CYFA 2!!

Week 2 is in the books.  It was an exciting week with Sequoyah taking home 5 wins and 2 losses.  Many teams got a much needed win and most kept the winning streak alive.  Here is a recap!  Tons of pictures can be seen at: http://cyfasequoyahdistrict.shutterfly.com

.

6/7 Division Update

.

Sequoyah Gold 6 – Woodstock Maroon 31

The boys are improving. They’re putting forth a great effort.  With only 15 players, many of them are playing “both ways” (Offense and Defense) and everyone’s getting a lot of playing time.
This week, we moved the ball much better with a few long runs by Jackson Gunnell and Frankie Roppo.  In fact, we scored our first touchdown on a long run by Jackson on 4th and long.  All 11 players contributed to the play making their blocks, getting a good snap and handoff, and Jackson did the rest.
The Defense and Special teams improved.  Both performed well at times, but a few missed assignments lead to scores for our opponents.  We had some good tackles on defense and our team didn’t commit a penalty.  If we can minimize the mental mistakes on plays, then team will have to watch out for Sequoyah Gold!

.

Sequoyah Black 0 – Woodstock Blue 25

(No updates.. it’s okay, Coach.. sometimes we just need to go back to base and regroup)

.

8/9 Division Update

.

Sequoyah Gold 8 – Creekview Blue 0

The champs just keep rolling….
8/9 Gold overcame several penalties on Saturday in their win against Creekview Blue.  Shawn Mask and Nolan Pollard led the defense and helped keep the Creekview team to only twelve total yards.  Joseph Trlica scored the only touchdown of the day and also caught the 2 point conversion pass.  Overall, a tough game with many penalties, but still a win!!  The coaches are extremely proud of the entire team.  The defensive player of the week is Shawn Mask and the offensive player of the week is Joseph Trlica.

.

Sequoyah White 18 – Etowah Blue 0
Nothing makes you grin like a hard fought win!

In summary for 8/9 White.  Our team played great and showed Etowah we are who they thought we were “Champions” defeating them 18-0.  We had a lot of input from all players to give us the victory including an Offensive line which drove the defenders into the ground and a defensive package which caused major chaos.  Individual kudos goes to Keon Smart with a rushing TD and an Interception taking it 45 yards for a TD.  To add,

Christian Hodgins had a rushing TD and an Interception as well.  On Special teams, Aden Cornett recovered the kick to close out the game and deliver victory #1 to the 8/9 White team.

.

Sequoyah Black 24 – River Ridge Gold 0

8/9 Black kept the winning streak going scoring early and often  Player of the game was Mark O’Brien

.

10/11 Updates

.

Sequoyah Black 26 – Woodstock Maroon 0
(No updates, but none needed.  Nice shutout coach Ray.)

.

Sequoyah Gold 8 – Creekview Blue 0
Highlight of the game:  Bradshaw Lathbury with a bone crushing hit against Creekview. Best hit and tackle of the season and came at a critical time of the game.  Miles McGee also had a long TD run before the half to give the Chiefs the lead.

SEQUOYAH FOOTBALL – WEEK IN REVIEW

Thanks to the coaches who highlighted their teams this week.  If your team isn’t in the spotlight, contact your head coach and tell him to send the updates!!!

.

6/7 SEQUOYAH GOLD:  Our little Chiefs played hard but fell to Creekview, 37 -0.

.

Coach Rogers said, “We definitely faced a tough and more experienced team.  However, the boys played very hard and can learn from this game. This game was a new experience for 12 of our 15 players. From playing on a larger field to a faster pace of lining up on offense and defense, this was quite different than practice.  During the second half, our defense played better and they got some “stops”…even recovered a fumble. On Offense, we’re only a block or two away from breaking a long play. As a team, they’ll get better and as coaches we’re proud of the boys!”  KEEP FIGHTING COACH!!
.

8/9 SEQUOYAH GOLD – The defending champs kept their undefeated streak going this week winning 27 -0!

.

Quarterback Collin Koprowski lead the defending champions Sequoyah Gold to a crushing victory over Woodstock Blue.  The offensive line lead by Jake Henley, Ben Gilleland, Christian Kirby, Shawn Mask, Davis Medford, Nolan Pollard, and Jack Thompson were the main reason for all of the success today.  The O-Line opened huge holes for the 1-2-3 punch of Damian D’Allasandro, Joseph Trilica, and Nicholas Ballance.  The blocking combined with the outside threat of our wingbacks helped Nicholas Ballance have a career best day of 100+ yards rushing.  On Defense, the story was the same although the heros were different.  Donovan Shipp in his first game ever had a “Pick Six” interception with a return of 50 yards.  Also with his first “INT” ever was Christian Kirby!  Our speed combo Nathan Pollard and Andrew Whitfield shored up the defensive backfield and prevented any big plays from Woodstock.  When the 3rd graders were in there, they dominated as well.  The Miller brothers along with Jackson Watts and Cameron Gilleland dominated there opponents and made several plays on the defensive side of the ball.  When Jordan Ali and Trent Chastain entered the game, the results were the same.  All together an outstanding effort by everyone on the Sequoyah Gold Squad.
.
8/9 SEQUOYAH BLACK.  Our Chiefs played hard for Coach Jason pulling out the 6-0 victory!

.
LANCE LEATHERWOOD is Sequoyah Black’s player of the week.  Lance was instrumental in the victory causing 3 fumbles and recording 1 sack!  Nice work Lance.

.

8/9 SEQUOYAH WHITE:  It was a rough weekend losing to River Ridge 19 -0.   However the Chiefs are working hard in practice this week and will rebound.
.
